Why Oxford

Oxfordshire is at the heart of the UK. Drawing on over 1000-year tradition of discovery and invention, modern Oxford leads the way in creating jobs, wealth, skills and innovation for the 21st century. Fast and efficient train and coach services link Oxford with London and the north and south of the country to other innovation clusters.

The Oxfordshire science and business ecosystem draws from several interdisciplinary departments and centres, some of which are brought together by the following focal points: Harwell cluster, Satellite Catapult, Oxford Centre for Innovation, Begbroke Science Park, Oxford University and Oxford Brookes.

According to Oxfordshire Skills Strategy 2020 vision document, Oxfordshire has strengths in a diverse range of business sectors including education, health, creative and media, construction and the science and technology sectors – all of which are forecast to grow as the economy improves. However, Oxfordshire’s innovation led growth vision suggests a greater focus in the future on the following sectors:

  • Life sciences and medical instruments:
  • High performance technologies
  • Satellite and data communication
  • Energy and environmental technologies
  • Digital, publishing and media
